Allergy Test

Allergy Tests at Dr. Tannu's Clinic

Allergy tests at a skin care clinic are typically conducted to identify specific allergens that might be causing skin reactions or other allergic symptoms. Here are some common types of allergy tests performed in such settings:

Types of Allergy Tests

  1. Skin Prick Test (SPT):

    • Small amounts of potential allergens are introduced to the skin, usually on the forearm or back, through tiny pricks or scratches.
    • If you're allergic to a substance, a small red bump (wheal) will appear at the test site within 15-20 minutes.
  2. Patch Test:

    • Small patches containing allergens are applied to the skin, usually on the back, and left in place for 48 hours.
    • After 48 hours, the patches are removed, and the skin is examined for any reactions. Another check is often done at 72 or 96 hours.
  3. Intradermal Test:

    • A small amount of allergen is injected just under the skin.
    • This test is more sensitive than the skin prick test and is often used if the skin prick test results are negative but an allergy is still suspected.
  4. Blood Test (e.g., RAST or ELISA):

    • Blood is drawn and tested in a lab to measure the level of IgE antibodies to specific allergens.
    • This test is often used if you have a skin condition that might interfere with skin testing or if you're taking medications that could affect skin test results.
